QELA MOOT 2024

The Queensland Environmental Law Association (QELA) is excited to announce its inaugural Moot Competition open to all Queensland Universities on Wednesday, 21st August and Thursday, 22nd August, 4.30pm – 8pm.

The competition is open to all students studying law and is limited to eight competing teams in 2024.

Moot Registration

Each institution is welcome to register up to two teams, each of which should register independently with the name of their institution. QELA will be in touch to request the names of each team member in due course.

Participation fee: A participation fee of $450 inclusive of GST per team is payable on formal registration for the competition. 

Registrations close on Friday, 2nd August 2024.


Moot Venues
The first day of the competition, Wednesday 21st August 20024, will be held at McCullough Robertson Lawyers.

The Semi and Grand Final will be held in the Brisbane District Court and will be followed by a networking function where competitors will be able to network with industry professionals.

Participation Benefits
Participation in the 2024 QELA Moot provides students with the following unique benefits:

• Competition judges will be a mix of sitting and retired Planning and Environment Court Judges and respected members of the profession.

• Each team will receive a two-hour mentoring session with a barrister and lawyer in the lead up to the competition. This will be your opportunity to ask any questions you may have from experienced members of the profession.

The competition problem will be released four weeks prior to the competition start date.

Competition Prizes

Winning Team – Best Speaker

• Each team member will be awarded a 2025 QELA Annual Conference ticket per person (capped at three) including accommodation for one night. Valued at over $1500 per person.
• The annual conference is QELA’s premier event, and the winners will be able to attend the entire two-day conference, including all social functions where you will have the opportunity to network with over 200 industry professionals!

Runner up

• $500 cash prize kindly donated by NELA. 
• The National Environmental Law Association (NELA) is Australia’s premier environmental law organisation. Established in 1982, NELA brings together professionals in environment and resources law and related disciplines, to promote the understanding of the role of environmental law in regulating and managing the conservation and usage of the environment. NELA and its Education Portfolio are happy to be partnering with QELA to support law students who have an interest in environmental law. 
• This prize is to be split between team members.
